KOTA KINABALU: An 18-year-old Sabahan student had to stay overnight in a tree to sit for her online examinations due to poor internet connection in her village.
Veveonah Mosibin, a student of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) posted a video of herself spending the night in a tree on her YouTube channel, struggling to obtain a stable internet connection to attend her online examinations.
Veveonah explained that she never planned to sit for her papers in a tree as she already built a bamboo hut on top of a hill. However, the hut was destroyed due to heavy rain.
“I already built a hut as a preparation for my online examination. Unfortunately, the hut was destroyed because it has been a while since I last visited it, so I wasn’t aware of its condition.
When I went to see the hut this morning, it already collapsed” she said.
Veveonah lives in a remote village of Kampung Sabanalang, Pitas, 200 km away from the city centre and internet connectivity is a luxury for those who live in the area.
After the commencement of the Movement Control Order (MCO), all institutions of higher learning in Malaysia have activated the online method for teaching and learning as well as examinations for the rest of the academic year.
For the Pitas-born lass, this was extremely difficult since she lives in an area where it is
particularly challenging to get a stable internet connection.
She eventually took the initiative to sleep on a tree for 24 hours as a challenge since she is required to have an uninterrupted internet connection while sitting for her examinations.
Veveonah’s “24 Hours on Tree Challenge” video on YouTube has become an overnight internet sensation as the video has garnered over 500,000 views and her channel currently has over 70,000 subscribers.
