Such can be said about fashion student, Nur Athirah Abdullah who is undergoing her diploma in Fashion Design at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Seri Iskandar, Perak.

The fashion design course in UiTM consists of learning how to appreciate art, drawing, sewing, drafting patterns and many more. The challenges that she faces includes a workload of assignments, internet issues and also difficulty in understanding lectures.

“Sometimes lecturers give out assignments on days that we don’t even have a class with them, which just increase our work load on a daily basis”, she says.

Internet problems are one of her major concerns as the area that she lives in does not have good coverage. It is hard for her to join online classes and also submit assignments on time.

As a fashion student, she is used to creating something out of nothing. For example, creating a beautiful avant-garde piece out of just plain cloth or using random materials to create a traditional look. Tasks like this develops her set skills and widens her creativity yet she is unable to do so because of this lockdown.

“During the start of RMO, I was glad that I could spend more time with my family but as the days go by, it becomes harder for me as a fashion student because we usually spend most of our time at the studio or sewing workshop”, she added.

Athirah faces her challenges hands on. To further develop her skills as a fashion designer, she spends some of her free time sewing using her personal sewing machine or sketching new pieces.

Not only that but she is also venturing into the business of selling cosmetics and head scarves for additional side income. “Since I am at home, I might as well try other things and grab my chance at any opportunity given”, says Athirah.

When she has difficulty in understanding online lectures, she takes the time to do her own research afterwards until she gets it right. As for assignments, Athirah tries her best to divide her time between work and play in order to finish it on time while still keeping her sanity.

Just like many other students, she pushes through the hardship in order to achieve her goals. “It is hard, I have to admit, yet I try to look on the brighter side of things”, she concludes.
